What is "karate"?

The word "Karate" in Japanese means empty hand. Shotokan is a weaponless martial art where an individual relies on the use of his or her own hands, arms, legs, and feet for self-defense.

Can anyone learn Karate?

Karate is suitable for men, women, and children alike. You do not need great flexibility or strength to become proficient in karate. For children, the emphasis in class will be placed on self-control and discipline. Primary importance is placed on having children develop respect for themselves as well as others. However, having fun and learning to enjoy Karate will also be stressed.

What do I wear?

A karate gi (white uniform) is most comfortable. However, for the first couple of classes, sweat pants and a T-shirt are appropriate.

How do I receive a new belt level?

All ranks MUST be earned! Training three times a week for three to four months is usually sufficient to learn your Kata and practice the kihon (basic blocks and kicks) required for your next belt level.

What are the levels of belts?

A beginner starts as a 10th kyu (white belt) and levels go downward to 9th, 8th, and 7th kyu (orange belts), 6th kyu (green belt), 5th and 4th kyu (purple belts), and 3rd, 2nd, and 1st kyu (brown belts). Dan ranks are black belts, which count upward from 1st Dan to 10th Dan. 5th Dan is considered Master level and is seldom achieved in the ITKF in less than twenty-five years of constant training.

Why do we bow all the time?

The simple reason is to show respect! When you are on the dojo floor, respect for each other is shown at all times.

Why do we need to yell when we practice Karate?

The one and only reason is because all the power for your techniques should originate from your abdomen (also known as your core center, or "hara"). This yell is called a "kiai".

How do I know if my child is ready to attend Karate classes?

When they have knowledge of right and left, and the ability to follow spoken directions. Also, they should be able to conduct themselves in a manner that will not disrupt the class.
